Nigeria: INEC Wants Special Fund for Female Candidates

Source:

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called for a special trust fund to finance female candidates vying for elective positions at all levels for the 2011 elections. INEC chairman Prof. Maurice Iwu, who made the advocacy yesterday in Abuja, said the much awaited electoral reforms will require corresponding attitudinal change and re-orientation from the political class.

"We desire to see more women as political party flag bearers or running mates in elections at all levels. We desire to see more women participate actively in the electoral process. This will empower our women and make our democracy more viable, sustainable, healthy and pro -development," Iwu said. Minister of women affairs Josephine Anenih, who spoke at the event, lamented that of the required 35 percent women representation and participation in governance, only two percent has been achieved.
