Nigeria: Legislating Against Domestic Violence

Domestic violence may take different forms including; physical, sexual, emotional, or financial. As a result, there has been a strong demand that all sections of the public should fight it. In fighting it however, the law enforcement agencies have key roles to play and that is why many have commended the recent step by the Lagos State Government to promulgate a law on domestic violence.

The feat was a culmination of efforts of former deputy speaker, Lagos House of Assembly, Mrs. Funmilayo Tejuoso who initiated the bill. She also took it upon herself to organise a colloquium on domestic violence to throw more light on its implementation as parts of activities to mark her 45 birthday celebration recently.

The Bill on DV has is yet to be passed in Nigeria. We are waiting and will continue to follow the trend because WENG approaching the issues springing off the non existence effects of this Bill.

Domestic violence in Nigeria needs profound re orientation of individuals involved. Sometimes it is a Socio - Cultural issue. Once identified and compliance agreed effective action needs to be taken really fast.

Provision for further support also needs be in place. I support this venture and believe that the society needs their minds educated.
Potential casualties, casualties and the next generation prevention are the three target groups here.
