Bhutan: Divided on the issue, members decide to debate

National Assembly members yesterday raised various concerns in adopting the domestic violence bill.
Education minister Thakur S Powdyel, who is also the NCWC chairperson, while introducing the bill, said reports in media, and records with hospitals on domestic violence, mandated the need for adopting the bill.

“If relations between wife and husband, parents and children, teachers and students are respected, this bill is not required,” he said.

The bill necessitates the establishment of women and child protection unit at every police station, like the one in Thimphu, equipped with relevant expertise in domestic violence.
