Four years after declaring independence, Kosovo has worked to construct and reinforce an inclusive political environment and strengthen democratic institutions. How have women been included in this work and what impact has their inclusion had on the country's institutions? What are the greatest obstacles to the equal participation of women in politics, civil society and other sectors? What strategies are being employed, both within government and civil society organizations, to increase the involvement of citizens, women in particular, in the democratic process?

A panel of four women leaders from Kosovo will discuss these questions and more as they visit NDI while in the United States on a NAAC Hope Fellowship. To read about the background of all of this year's Hope Fellows, see the NAAC website: http://www.naac-hf.org/.

Established in 2001 with USAID funding, the NAAC's Hope Fellowship program strengthens women's policy decision-making skills in the Balkans through educational opportunities and leadership development in the public and private sectors. With funding from the U.S. Agency for International Development and the National Endowment for Democracy, NDI has supported women's political participation as part of comprehensive democracy support programs throughout the Balkans since 1991.

The National Democratic Institute is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization working to support and strengthen democratic institutions worldwide by promoting citizen participation, openness and accountability in government.
