IPU: Women in Politics-The Fight to End Violence Against Women

Source:

Despite the remarkable progress of women in many professions, politics is not one of them. Indeed, around the world, women have been conspicuous by their absence in decision and policy making in government. We know that women’s participation in politics makes a difference. Women bring different views, talents and perspectives to politics which help shape the political agenda. Changes in how parliaments operate reflect the positive impact of the presence of women, such as an improvement in the language and behaviour in parliaments; a different prioritization of issues and policies; gender sensitivity in all aspects of governing, including budgeting; and the introduction of new legislation and changes to existing laws.

As i write this article, various interventions across  the world are being establised to underline Women in various angles. At the turn of the 20th century, women did not at all have a vote in decision making   and had to have a big struggle to obtain fulll rights of the citzenary.Today in different democracies, participation of women is taking a significancy but how ever, many women are still struglling to get a voice in decision making and politics. There is alot of rhetoric , the so called powerful groups often prevent women from raising issues that are important to them and therefore fail to often form  a part of debate and basis for women friendly policies.

In another  angle ,most African states have gone multi-partism but the question is , how far do these political parties' agenda consititute  women  in thier party programs and can they at all  make  economic, social and political accountability  to women ?

If i zero down to Uganda, the present regime usually brags around saying ,'we brought women out of kitchen " which may quite be true that involement of women in politics have relatively increased but this statement looses meaning  and  is too cosmetic, on issue of good governance and meaningful  democracy , intergrity and tranperance, women and health, security of women , education, enviroment, economic empowerment of the  women, and advancing rights of women. All these symatic  areas are still hanging un answered in uganda with very big gaps for government to fill in.

Above all  one wonders if government has a physical policy on women or rather even other political parties ?

Therefore, if women around the Globe don't come out precisely with determination to dance the tune, determine the tune and direct the tune, gender parity and women indulgance  in important matters of society will continue to be a myth.
