The Speaker of the National Assembly of Mauritius, Ms. Santi Bai Hanoomanjee, has stressed the importance that a Parliamentary Gender Caucus would empower the Government’s commitment to gender equality. At least 300 women would have been trained in politics by the end of 2013 under a programme aimed at politically empowering women in Mauritius, PANA reported from here Monday.

The training, which includes campaign planning and development of campaign materials, public speaking, media relations and electoral laws, is being carried out by the Ministry of Gender Equality, Child Development and Family Welfare.

While the island nation has made some recent progress in political representation of women at the level of Parliament, much remains to be done to allow women to enjoy their full rights in the political arena.
