Monitoring the participation, progress and achievements of women in politics is key to developing efficient policies and strategies to maintain progress. In the early 1990s, women parliamentarians accounted for 11.3 percent of members of parliaments worldwide. Over time, the proportion has steadily increased. The progress is slow, however, and is not universal. Regional and national disparities highlight the diversity of factors that affect women’s political participation.
