Set Back in Women Empowerment Struggle in Nigeria
Recent events in Nigeria has cast dooubts over the ability of women to hold power and indeed make a difference in a male dominated politics, that is by and large not in the interests of the poor majority. Former minister of health and the respected professor of peadiatrics, Adenike Grange, has just 'resigned' on allegations of corruption and fraud. This is following the exit of the first female speaker over a very similar circumstance. At the heart of the ministry of health saga is an alleged 10 million naira given to the senate committee on health, again headed by a woman Iyabo Obasanjo. Such a crisis situation is one too many especially when expectations are so high to make the deisred difference. Though some people have said that the crisis they are facing is nothing compared to those perpetuated by men, but if the ratio of those in power is computed against those alleged to be corrupt, then it will be evident that we indeed have a problem.
What can we do to help the few women in power, remain focused on the issues and not be swept off by the spoils of the office?
