Kuwait: Women express shock at absence on political scene

Source:

KUWAIT: One of the most poignant features of Kuwait’s political scene is undoubtedly the absence of women in both the Cabinet and Parliament. This has many Kuwaiti women asking how the gender imbalance may affect them. Many have come forward expressing shock and disappointment at what they describe as a ‘step-back’ for Kuwaiti women on the political scene: “I really cannot believe it. Normally once that gender barrier gets broken the first time, you imagine that things will continue to improve from there. I am so disappointed. We are going backwards, not forwards,” said 49-year-old Lulwa, adding that the new political stage will be detrimental for women across Kuwait.
