Women's Participation in Politics and Government in Indonesia

Just as Indonesia varies geographically, culturally and socially, so do women across the archipelago. Women’s roles have become increasingly public; women today enjoy many of the same educational opportunities as men and make up a significant proportion of the labour force. Women make up just under half of the civil service, and there are now more women than ever sitting in parliament.

The Government of Indonesia is committed to upholding women’s rights through a number of legal provisions, and is signatory to several commitments and covenants regarding gender equality. While a Presidential Decree issued in 2000 mandates gender mainstreaming as a task to be undertaken by the government, the Ministry of Women’s Empowerment has drafted a new law on gender equality, which they hope to have passed this year, and implemented by 2011. The law would replace the Presidential Decree in order to ensure gender sensitive policies are implemented across all ministries and local governments, and would have the legal jurisdiction to do so.

"In recent years, the percentage of female candidates and members of parliament has been falling, as I believe women look at the success rate and decide to give it a miss," said Troeth, who was first elected to the Federal Senate in 1993 at age 52.

According to a survey released last week, Finland topped the ranking, with more than half of its governmental roles being occupied by females.

Portugal rates 27th on the list, with just 17.9 percent of governmental roles, Ministerial or Secretarial, being filled by women. This is according to the first report from the Observatory for Integrated Gender/System of Information and Knowledge, created by the Committee for Equality and Gender.

Saudia Arabia: Women's rights gain in Saudi Arabia

Submitted by iKNOW Politics on Thu, 2010-05-20 14:31
Summary:

After years of stymied efforts, the reform focus in Saudi Arabia is centering on women’s rights. A recent survey by the Researchers Center for Women’s Studies in Riyadh examining Saudi newspapers and websites showed that from mid-January to mid-February 2010 some 40 percent of articles in print media and 58 percent of articles on websites treated women’s issues. Empowering women has become a priority for local activists and various initiatives are springing up to secure their basic rights. The most recent and ambitious of these efforts is a national campaign, driven by local actors, calling for women’s participation in municipal elections scheduled for autumn 2011.

Prominent human rights activists, women’s rights activists, writers and elected municipal council members are spearheading this national campaign for electoral participation, which was launched in March 2010. The goal is to coordinate activities on this issue throughout the kingdom, including advocacy and media coverage, public meetings and speeches, writing to officials, and training candidates. The Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs has not yet ruled on the issue of allowing women to vote or to register as candidates.

USA: Women in politics: Do they have an advantage over male candidates

Submitted by iKNOW Politics on Tue, 2010-05-18 11:20
Summary:

"When they do run, women do have a slight advantage," said Frederick, who teaches at Bridgewater State College in Massachusetts. "Voters typically see them as more honest than male candidates."

Barb Brown, Democratic state precinct committeewoman, agreed. But in Randolph County where Brown was elected as circuit clerk, Pat Laramore serves as county clerk and Shirlie Robinson serves as treasurer, Brown thinks that attitude is changing.

"I remember a time when women would work for the party and in a county office and a vacancy would come open for one of these jobs, and we would ask them to run and they would say they didn't think they could," Brown said. "They were already running the office, had the skills, providing the leadership, but they didn't have the confidence in themselves."
