Where leadership lives: Five young African women on authority, care and the institutions that shape possibility

Source: UNDP

In Sarra Mansour’s hometown in Algeria, water scarcity can last for days. Women manage household resources, adjust daily routines and keep family life steady. Their decisions carry consequences for health, time, and collective wellbeing. Sarra, an Algerian fellow placed in Togo, names this authority plainly: “To me, women’s leadership includes both decision-making in boardrooms and the quiet resilience that sustains communities every day.”

Her image places leadership across the full landscape of daily life. It is exercised in formal institutions, community organizations, families, markets, movements, and cultural work. Five African Young Women Leaders fellows trace this landscape from their own countries and placement contexts. Together, they offer a confident account of women’s authority as a present force and a practical agenda for the systems that surround it.
