USA: Weinberg-Allen Resolution Opposing Iran's Election to UN Commission on Status of Women Approved
A resolution sponsored by Senators Loretta Weinberg and Diane Allen, two of the four co-chairs of the Women’s Legislative Caucus – and co-sponsored by every woman currently serving in the State Senate – expressing opposition to the recent election of Iran to the United Nations’ Commission on the Status of Women was approved by a voice vote in the Senate today.
“Iran’s track record on women’s rights is abhorrent, and promoting Iran to the UN Commission on the Status of Women sends the wrong message to women around the globe who have fought for better treatment and equal standing from their nations’ governments,” said Senator Weinberg, D-Bergen.
Women activists warned this week that lack of financial support is hindering efforts to support female candidates in the upcoming elections. "We are having difficulties supporting candidates for this election because most of the support we are receiving is logistical rather than financial,” Jordanian National Forum for Women (JNFW) Secretary General May Abul Samen told The Jordan Times.
Feminists rejoiced when Julia Gillard became Australia's first female leader, but her failure to win national polls has raised questions about whether the country is ready to have a woman in charge.
Australians delivered a hung parliament in August 21 polls, with neither centre-left Labor Prime Minister Gillard nor her conservative opponent Tony Abbott galvanising enough support to form a government. Leading feminist Eva Cox believes that while some voters have supported 48-year-old Gillard simply because she was a woman, others probably voted against her for the same reason.
n the run-up to Tanzania’s general elections 31 October, the United Nations Development Fund for Women, UNIFEM (part of UN Women), will conduct workshops throughout September for women candidates in seven electoral zones to strengthen their election strategies. The trainings seek to empower women candidates by improving their skills in public speaking, media engagement, campaign planning, presentations, community mobilization, advocacy and lobbying.
Despite the remarkable progress of women in many professions, politics is not one of them. Indeed, around the world, women have been conspicuous by their absence in decision and policy making in government. We know that women’s participation in politics makes a difference. Women bring different views, talents and perspectives to politics which help shape the political agenda. Changes in how parliaments operate reflect the positive impact of the presence of women, such as an improvement in the language and behaviour in parliaments; a different prioritization of issues and policies; gender sensitivity in all aspects of governing, including budgeting; and the introduction of new legislation and changes to existing laws.
