Around the world, women play critical roles as first responders and leaders when humanitarian crisis occurs. They change and save lives in the hardest to reach places. Yet, their work is consistently under-funded and often unrecognized. As COVID-19 continues to ravage communities, the need to support women and women’s organizations in humanitarian action has become urgent. Through participatory videos, women in Bangladesh, Colombia, Jordan and Uganda share their perspectives.

UN Women, in collaboration with ITU (the UN agency for information and communication technologies), and youth and gender equality activists around the world, celebrated International Youth Day on 12 August with a virtual event. Co-hosted by international activist and Miss Universe, Zozibini Tunzi, the event featured performances by international artists and vibrant conversations about social justice, peace and security and the impact of COVID-19 on youth.

The scenario in Kenyan politics, however, contravenes this adage that is worth making reference to if the role of women in the society is anything to go by- besides being many important things, they are nurturers.

It does not need a keen eye to see that the political field of play in Kenya is dominated by not just males, but older males in that case. This is not to say that women are not in politics and neither is it insinuating women's roles in leadership can be overlooked.
