First woman to be Speaker of an Arab national council: Dr Amal Al Qubaisi of the UAE

Dr Amal Al Qubaisi was elected by her peers on Wednesday, 18 November 2015, the Speaker of the United Arab Emirates' Federal National Council (FNC). Today, history is made as Dr Al Qubaisi becomes the first woman to fill the shoes of the Speaker of an Arab national council. Eight other Emirati women are part of the 40 member council in the country's capital Abu Dhabi, giving women a 22.5% representation. 

Dr Al Qubaisi, who is serving her third term as an FNC member, has a strong record in breaking glass ceilings given that she was the first female to be elected member of the FNC in 2006 and to become Deputy Speaker later. For more information, please click here
