One woman elected in Oman’s Shura Council

Source:

November 4th 2015, Nemah bint Jamiel bin Farhan Al-Busaidiya took an oath in Muscat, Oman.

Omani citizens elected new members to the Shura Council on October 25th, 2015. Of the 525,785 registered voters, 56.6% went out to vote, according to the official Oman News Agency. This is a clear decrease as 76% of voters cast their ballots in 2011.

570 men and 20 women competed for the council’s 85 seats. Only one woman, Nemah bint Jamiel bin Farhan Al-Busaidiya, succeeded in winning a seat in the council. Omani women’s rights advocate, Aisha Kharusi, qualified the results as “disappointing”. With the hope that the new council adopts progressive laws in the future, she believes that “the way forward for women candidates is to ensure a quota is put in place”.
