Description:

St. Kitts & Nevis

Saint Kitts and Nevis elects on national level a legislature. The National Assembly has 15 members. In the National Assembly, 3 members are nominated to the House to serve a 5-year term and 11 members are elected by popular vote to serve a 5-year term. Saint Kitts and Nevis has a two-party system, which means that there are two dominant political parties.

In August, 1998 a referendum was held in which a 62% majority of Nevisians voted for secession from the federation with St. Kitts; however, a two-thirds majority was required in order to make the split a reality. Secession is provided for in the Constitution (Section 113) and is dependent on a two-thirds majority vote by special referendum.
