The monetisation of politics in Africa is impeding the effective participation of women in political and electoral processes, Ayisha Osori, a democracy and governance expert, has said.

Madam Osori, who is the Director of Open Society Foundations, a civil society organisation, observed that many women on the continent did not have the ability to raise the needed capital to fund their political activities.

The National Women Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Louisa Hannah Bissiw, has called on the women leadership of political parties to mentor young ladies in and out of tertiary education to partake in active politics.

She explained that women’s participation in partisan politics was low and needed strategic intervention on the part of parties that believed in equity and equality to reverse the trend.

The Gender Centre for Empowering Development (GenCED) on Tuesday December 1, 2020 launched a research report on “Violence Against Women Within Political Parties”.

The research, which covered the operations, structures, and processes of the major political parties in Ghana (NDC, NPP, CPP, PNC, PPP) made some revelations about issues that hamper women’s full political processes and governance in Ghana.
