Online Webinar – My Body, My Rights, Our Fight: Defending Reproductive Freedom
On the occasion of International Women's Rights Month, the World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT) organises an online webinar to tackle the subject of sexual and reproductive rights in the world and the people who defend them. In a historic time that sees constant drawbacks on these rights, activists and human rights defenders are at the forefront of this struggle.
Indeed, the global landscape of sexual and reproductive rights (SRR) is facing unprecedented challenges. While progress has been made in some countries, a concerning trend of restrictive legislation and judicial decisions is threatening women's autonomy and access to essential healthcare that can amount to torture or other ill-treatment. As patriarchal forces push back against gender equality, the space to advocate for sexual and reproductive rights is shrinking, with increasing restrictions on protest and public advocacy.
Our four panellists, activists, academics and litigators, will discuss the systemic challenges human rights defenders face and strategic activism driving the fight for reproductive justice. By examining individual country cases, this event aims at providing a nuanced and full understanding of the growing tactics used to restrict SRR and the powerful resistance led by organisations and activists to counter them.
