Pakistan: Women's Rights Activist Fareeda 'Kokikhel' Afridi Shot Dead in Peshawar

Fareeda 'Kokikhel' Afridi, director of the Society for Appraisal and Women Empowerment in Rural Areas (Sawera), a Pakistani non-governmental organisation dedicated to women's rights, has been murdered in a tribal area.

Afridi was shot once in the head and twice in the neck, officials said. She was killed in the Khyber tribal region.

"She was on her way to the office when militants opened fire," Jamrud political administration official Asmatullah Wazir told reporters.

Fareeda 'Kokikhel' Afridi, director of the Society for Appraisal and Women Empowerment in Rural Areas (Sawera), a Pakistani non-governmental organisation dedicated to women's rights, has been murdered in a tribal area.

In dealing with women’s issues in Jakarta, the candidates to be Jakarta’s next governor are apparently not all on the same page.

During a public discussion entitled “Perempuan Jakarta Nyari Gubernur” (Jakarta women seek a governor) on Tuesday, Alex Noerdin and Joko “Jokowi” Widodo focused on maternity needs.

Aurat Foundation and other civil society organisations, including Legislative Watch Group, Violence Against Women Watch Group and Citizen Action Committees for Women Rights, expressing solidarity with women MPAs, strongly condemned the gender-biased behaviour of the treasury members, particularly MPA Sheikh Allauddin of the Unification Bloc during the Punjab Assembly session on Thursday.
