It may be the 21st Century, but many of the barriers that kept women from entering politics over the last 100 years still exist, said 20-year-old university student Supriya Trivedi.

For instance, juggling a career with motherhood remains a significant obstacle for prospective female politicans, Trivedi said.

“I definitely felt that we were past that,” she said.

Although traditional political institutions have undertaken efforts to become more accessible for young people and women, it seems these efforts were not enough to break the hierarchical structure of these institutions.

UN Women Deputy Executive Director Lakshmi Puri yesterday met with key ministers of the new Government in India whose efforts will be crucial to the progress of the country’s women and girls – who represent over 18 per cent of the world’s women.

In her meeting with Maneka Sanjay Gandhi, India’s Minister for Women and Child Development, Ms. Puri offered UN Women’s continued support and conveyed the organization’s unwavering commitment to advance the gender equality, women's empowerment and rights project in India.

On May 27, the National Democratic Institute hosted the 2014 HOPE Fellows for a presentation titled, “When Legislation is Not Enough: Addressing Gaps in Implementation of Kosovo’s Laws on Gender Equality.” Speaking directly to the topic of realizing gender equality in Kosovo, the Fellows shed light on four main issue areas: 1) implementing written law: 2) strengthening the rule of law; 3) combating social norms; and 4) producing realistic action plans.

UN Women seeks youth nominations for its global and regional Civil Society Advisory Groups

UN Women is issuing a global call for nominations to enlist two new members as youth representatives on its Global Civil Society Advisory Group (GCSAG).

In 2012, UN Women established the GCSAG as a consultative forum and a platform for regular dialogue with civil society. The Group is constituted by 22 eminent civil society representatives, whose expertise the Executive Director consults as necessary to foster dialogue to advance global goals of gender equality and women’s empowerment.
