After gaining the right to vote and participate in elections in 1952, one would assume that more female politicians would be taking part in Lebanon’s administrative scene. Women won the right to participate in politics 19 years before those in Switzerland, a neutral European country. But what have they done with this?

According to a 2012 survey by the World Economic Forum, Pakistan is still considered to be one of the worst places in the world to be a woman. With a total of 37 million registered female voters, the policies adopted by political parties to ensure the rights and progress of women might play a key role in the outcome of the elections.

LAHORE: As many as 147 women are contesting election 2013 in 105 National Assembly and 301 women in 203 provincial assembly constituencies on general seats. As per data compiled by a research based organization and released by Aazar Ayaz, Executive Director TR to Media here on Monday shows that 90 women candidates are contesting elections in 66 constituencies in Punjab.

here have been five elections in the Vancouver-area riding of Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows since the district was created in 1991 and more than two dozen candidates — but only one of them, a long-shot Marijuana party candidate in 2005, was a woman. Elizabeth Rosenau, who’s running for the NDP in the May 14 election, is the second female candidate.

The failure of existing political parties to fulfill their promise of 33% quota for women in state legislatures and parliament has forced a group of city’s women to face the issue head on by floating a party for women — the Mahila Pradhana Paksha (MPP).

Political parties have been urged to field more women candidates in the forthcoming elections if Zimbabwe is to realise gender equity and women’s empowerment by 2015.

Despite the welcome addition of a woman candidate contesting independently from Bajaur Agency, the overall number of women candidates contesting on general seats of the National Assembly (NA) has stayed much the same since the 2002 election.
