MEXICO - Mexico is on course to elect its first woman president this weekend, with two front-runners competing to break the highest political glass ceiling in a country with a history of gender violence and inequality.

Ruling-party candidate Claudia Sheinbaum and opposition hopeful Xochitl Galvez, both 61, have dominated the presidential race in the world's most populous Spanish-speaking country, home to 129 million people.

Nana Shettima, wife of Vice-President Kashim Shettima and other stakeholders, says political equity and women’s empowerment are crucial to sustainable development in Nigeria.

They stated this at the Women of Worth Group Global Magazine unveiling and Award Dinner in Abuja.

Ms Shettima said Nigerian women had faced numerous challenges yet were relentless in achieving their dreams.

A record number of women candidates are expected to run in June's local elections.

So far, 649 women have been selected or declared for the contests.

Although nominations do not close until midday on Saturday, this would mean around a third of candidates would be women.

The figures were provided by Women for Election based on analysis by the NUI Maynooth lecturer, Adrian Kavanagh.
