Women, Peace and Security

Established international norms and standards promote the protection of women during armed conflict and their participation in peace and security decision-making. The UN Security Council resolution 1325 on women, peace and security (UNSCR 1325) is one of the critical tools for moving the gender equality agenda forward in conflict and postconflict situations.

Libyan Women’s Platform for Peace launches a Charter of Libyan Women’s Constitutional Rights

After a series of workshops and consultations on the constitution, held beginning in 2013, the Libyan Women’s Platform for Peace (LWPP) launches a Charter of Libyan Women’s Constitutional Rights. The LWPP has been working on building consensus about the constitution’s most controversial issues, such as the role of sharia and international conventions in the constitution, as well as charting women’s priorities and rights.

In 2000, the Security Council adopted the ground-breaking resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security — the first to link women’s experiences of conflict to the international peace and security agenda. It focused on the disproportionate impact  of conflict on women, and called for their engagement in conflict resolution and peacebuilding. In 2015, the Security Council will convene a High-level Review to assess progress at the global, regional and national levels in implementing the resolution.
