MP Mhairi Black’s resignation proves not enough is being done to support young women in politics

When 20-year-old Mhairi Black was elected as an MP in 2015, she was hailed a prodigy. A force to be reckoned with. As the youngest MP elected to the House of Commons since the Reform Act of 1832, she was pegged as the next new political star, her presence promised a shake-up of the old boys’ club of Westminster that was so desperately needed.
Yet, only eight years later, the Paisley and Renfrewshire South MP has announced that she will step down from the Scottish National Party at the next election, citing the “outdated, sexist and toxic” working environment as her reason.
