Opinion: Threats and harassment against San Diego politicians are increasing. This hurts all of us.

Last fall, the University of San Diego’s Violence, Inequality and Power Lab and the USD-San Diego Community College District Institute for Civil Civic Engagement conducted a research study to assess the frequency and intensity of threats and harassment directed toward local elected officials across San Diego County. That includes mayors, members of school boards, community college boards, city councils and the Board of Supervisors. We surveyed over 300 elected officeholders, conducted interviews with some of them, and analyzed hundreds of thousands of social media posts.
