Though the total number of voters as on January 1, 2014 was 32,19,406, the rising awareness about the importance of the right to vote led to the total number of voters increasing to 33,46,639 in the last four months.
"We received nearly 1.4 lakh applications from new voters till April 9. After scrutinizing them, we have declared 1,27,233 applicants eligible for voter identity cards. With the these new voters, the number of voters rose to 33,46,639," said Suryanarayana Murthy, superintendent of the Election Cell at the collectorate.
