Chile’s low female political participation takes center stage

President Sebastián Piñera’s center-right National Renovation (RN) party celebrated one year of their “Women’s Network” campaign to increase female political participation Friday.National Women’s Service (Sernam) Minister Carolina Schmidt and mayor for Lampa Graciela Ortúzar were in attendance at the event at RN party headquarters in Santiago, where both spoke about the difficulties faced by women in Chile’s male-dominated political environment.Women account for only 14 percent of Chile’s parliament, falling considerably beneath the 22.3 percent average for Latin America and 25 percent for Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) member countries.
