The newly constituted 16th Assembly of Uttar Pradesh has 35 women members, that is the highest number of women MLAs in the history of the state Assembly since Independence.
A total of 582 women candidates were in the fray in the Assembly elections and 35 of them, including three Muslims, got elected to the Vidhan Sabha. Among these, maximum 20 are from the SP, seven from the BJP, three each from the Congress and BSP, one from Apna Dal and one Independent. Together, they constitute 8.6 per cent of the 403-member Assembly.
