2027: Women may occupy only 2.7% of Senate seats, coalition warns

A coalition of women-led groups and civil society organisations has warned that women’s representation in Nigeria’s Senate could decline to as low as 2.7 per cent after the 2027 general elections if urgent action isn’t taken to reverse the decline in women’s political representation following 2026 party primaries across 22 political parties.

The coalition also called on political parties to adopt female deputy governorship candidates for all male governorship aspirants ahead of the 2027 elections to boost women’s participation in governance.

In a statement shared with PUNCH Healthwise, the women’s rights advocates made the demands during a national press conference and roundtable dialogue convened to assess women’s participation in the recently concluded 2026 party primaries across 22 political parties and push for reforms ahead of the next general elections.

PUNCH Healthwise reports that of the 15 presidential candidates who emerged from the 2027 party primaries, only two are women.
