From capacity building to empowering women in politics: The mark of a project for gender equality.
During the period 2021-2026, the project "Promoting Gender Equality and Enhancing Women's Capacity in Politics," implemented by the Phu Yen Provincial Women's Union (formerly) with funding from the Australian People's Organization for Health, Education and Overseas Development (Union Aid Abroad – APHEDA), has created positive changes in capacity building and promoting women's participation in elected bodies, contributing to the achievement of gender equality goals in the province.
After nearly five years of implementation, from October 2021 to June 2026, the project not only focused on equipping female People's Council representatives with knowledge and skills, but also gradually formed a network to connect and support female representatives at all levels; while simultaneously impacting community awareness and the responsibility of all levels and sectors in implementing gender equality and gender mainstreaming.
Connecting female representatives – improving the quality of elected officials.
One of the highlights of the project is the establishment of the Women's Club of the Provincial People's Council, according to Decision No. 38/QD-HĐND dated October 29, 2021, of the Standing Committee of the Phu Yen Provincial People's Council, with 22 members who are female representatives of the provincial-level People's Council and full-time female representatives of the district-level People's Council, for the term 2021-2026. The club was formed with the goal of creating a space for female representatives to connect, exchange information, share experiences, and support each other in performing the functions and duties of elected representatives; and at the same time contribute to enhancing the role of female representatives in proposing solutions to integrate gender into the process of building local policies and plans. Through the club's activities, many issues arising from the practical operation of the People's Council have been discussed and debated. Female delegates have more opportunities to share experiences, update information on socio- economic development, elected activities, oversight and questioning skills, as well as content related to gender mainstreaming in resolution drafting and monitoring the implementation of policies at the local level.
