Side-event at the 72nd UNGA: The Role of Global and Regional Actors to Advance Gender Equality and Political Empowerment of Women
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development seeks to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls in order to leave no one behind. To assist in the implementation of this Agenda, and in support and cooperation with regional organizations, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Communities of Democracies and International IDEA have collaborated over the last year to develop a publication on “Global and Regional Organizations, Gender Equality and the Political Empowerment of Women”. This knowledge product incorporates the results of five regional consultations that took place over the past year and brought together politicians, representatives of international organizations and civil society to discuss the challenges of ensuring gender equality in democratically elected bodies, as well as the work of the main regional organizations worldwide to advance this agenda. The Guidebook suggests a set of straight-forward recommendations that will inform policy makers at the state and at the multilateral level to develop more effective actions to ensure the political empowerment of women.
The side-event is yet another opportunity for continuing the dialogue among partners and to share highlights of the Publication. Discussions will center on how equal women’s political participation is an essential part of achieving the SDGs, by exploring options to increase equal opportunities and conditions for political participation and representation between men and women.
The side-event will focus on the following activities that will be backed up by global, high-level speakers – politicians with the experience of what it is to be a woman involved in politics and to face gender-based political violence and discrimination:
- The presentation of the publication “Global and Regional Organizations, Gender Equality and the Political Empowerment of Women”,
- Panel discussion on the global and regional policy recommendations, promoting the debate on the role of global and regional actors to advance gender equality and political empowerment of women.
