Morocco Introduces New Electoral Rules to Boost Women’s Political Representation

Source: Barlaman Today

Morocco’s electoral system has introduced new measures aimed at increasing women’s representation in Parliament and expanding their role in the creation of political parties ahead of the Sept. 23 elections, according to Morocco’s Press Agency (MAP).

Under the new rules, regional electoral districts will accept only female candidates. Women can also continue to run in local electoral districts.

The measure seeks to protect parliamentary seats allocated to women when authorities hold partial elections or replace lawmakers who leave their seats.

The new system also offers financial incentives for regional candidate lists composed exclusively of women aged 35 or younger. Political parties and independent candidates can qualify for the incentives.

Changes to Morocco’s political party rules also seek to increase women’s participation from the earliest stages of party formation. At least four women must now serve among the 12 members required to declare the creation of a political party.
