Kenyan women seeking elective positions face political violence, harassment and high campaign costs that continue to limit their participation in leadership, female legislators have said.
The legislators raised the concerns during a session of the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians (CWP) held in Cape Town, South Africa, on Monday, September 14, 2026, as lawmakers from across the Commonwealth discussed ways of increasing women’s participation in political leadership.
According to a statement shared by Parliament Kenya on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, the discussions come ahead of Kenya’s 2027 General Election, with women leaders pushing for greater representation in elective and decision-making positions.
Vihiga Woman Representative Beatrice Adagala, who is Vice-Chairperson of the CWP Executive Committee, urged women to remain resilient and seek elective positions despite the challenges.
