Female MPs in Tanzania have called for an apology to an MP who was ordered to leave parliament because of her trousers.

A male MP said the way some women dressed invited ridicule to parliament.

"Mr Speaker, an example there is my sister seated on my right with a yellow shirt. Look at the trousers she has worn, Mr Speaker!" Hussein Amar said in parliament on Tuesday.

The political agreement signed in Somalia this past heralds not just a new democratic dawn but also one of equity and inclusivity by raising the quota of women in the formal political space to at least a third of the bicameral federal legislature.

Cyprus, already among the countries where women account for fewer than one in five members in parliaments, experienced a three per cent drop in representation compared with the 2016 parliamentary elections.

Only eight women gained one of the 56 seats in parliament, translating to a female representation of 14 per cent, down from 17 per cent in 2016. This figure later rose to 12 women, or 21.4 per cent, after reshuffles a year later.

FREDERICTON -- Kassim Doumbia says he always wanted to get involved and be active in his community. He moved to Shippagan 14 years ago, and has spent the last nine years on the town’s council.

Tuesday night, Doumbia became New Brunswick’s first Black mayor. He calls it a dream.
