Enabling political participation of women with disabilities as the focus of OSCE/ODIHR event

Promoting the full and equal participation of women with disabilities in political and public life was the focus of discussions at a conference organized by the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) in Vienna on 16 and 17 April 2018.

Over 90 parliamentarians and representatives of OSCE delegations, academia and civil society, including women’s networks and disabled people’s organizations, participated in the event.

Liberia and Africa's first ever female president, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has jetted in the country to engage the parliamentary women caucus and committee on gender equality, social development and family affairs on gender related issues. 

Sirleaf, who has been acclaimed as a major inspiration for women in politics in Namibia, has said she is here to listen so much as to speak on how Namibia has progressed on gender parity among other things.

House Republicans have doubled the number of female candidates they have recruited to run for congressional seats this year as they seek to hold their majority and counter accusations of a gender gap with Democrats.

There are 103 Republican women, including incumbents, running for House seats this election — up from 48 in the previous election cycle, according to the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University.
