Mia Mottley, who shot to international fame during the Cop26 climate talks and oversaw Barbados’s break with the Queen last year, has won a second term as the Caribbean nation’s prime minister.

The 56-year-old’s Barbados Labour party (BLP) won all 30 seats, up from 29 in 2018, in an election marred by complaints that thousands of Covid-positive Bajans were denied a vote.

For the first time in the island’s history, women leaders will take Barbados’ two major political parties into the arena as the island prepares for a snap general election. Incumbent prime minister, Mia Mottley, head of the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) will face off with attorney-at-law Verla De Peiza and the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) at the polls set for January 19, 2022.

This will also be the first general election to take place since the island became a republic at midnight on November 30.

According to Mia Mottley, the first female Prime Minister of Barbados, women make better leaders than men because they are more caring’ and run their country ‘like a family household’.

The 54 year old Barbadian politician Mia had appeared on Good Morning Britain today with former Prime Minister of Denmark, Helle Thorning-Schmidt and the former Prime Minister of Australia, Julia Gillard to debate on better leadership between men and women.

Speaking on the show, Mia Mottley said;

The Barbados Labour Party (BLP) has won the country's 2018 General Elections claiming all 30 seats in the country's House of Assembly and unseating the Democratic Labour Party (DLP), which has governed the country since 2008.

The crushing victory for the BLP means that its political leader Mia Amor Mottley will be sworn in as Barbados' first female Prime Minister since the country gained independence from Britain in 1966.
