Hungary: Report highlights lack of women in Hungarian politics

Hungary occupies the penultimate place within the European Union in terms of the proportion of women among lawmakers, far behind other nations in the CEE region, national daily Nepszabadsag said on Saturday.

Citing lecturer Gabriella Ilonszki of Budapest’s Corvinus University, the paper said that women make up a mere 9.1 percent of Hungarian MPs while the corresponding proportion is 22 percent in the Czech Republic and 21 percent in Latvia.

Three members of the Russian female punk band Pussy Riot are among the eight candidates nominated for the 2012 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought.

The trio, who were imprisoned for staging a musical protest derogatory to President Vladimir Putin at Moscow's main cathedral early this year, were nominated on Thursday by Werner Schulz, German member of the European Parliament.
