Two female candidates nominated in Kazakhstan’s presidential elections for first time

ASTANA – Human rights activist Saltanat Tursynbekova was nominated to run for the presidency by Qazaq analary – dasturge zhol (Kazakh mothers are a path to traditions) public association on Oct. 11, reported the association’s press services.

Saltanat Tursynbekova is a member of the Public Council of Astana and founder of the Kazakhstan without domestic violence social project. She is a human rights activist, who focuses on women’s and children’s rights.

On May 25, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signed the law titled “Amendments to the Constitutional Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan,” “Elections in the Republic of Kazakhstan” and the law on “Amendments and Additions to the Law on Political Parties in the Republic of Kazakhstan”. The laws are of particular importance for the county’s political life and will serve to further develop Kazakhstan’s multi-party system.

Kazakhstan could see first female presidential candidate as Ak Zhol party nominates Yespayeva

The Ak Zhol party nominated April 24 Daniya Yespayeva as its candidate for the 9 June presidential election. If confirmed by the Kazakhstan Central Election Commission, Yespayeva would be the first woman in Kazakh history to run for president.

Yespayeva, a banker from the Aktobe Region, received 49.5% of the party’s 190 voters in a secret ballot.
