The Speaker of the National Assembly of Mauritius, Ms. Santi Bai Hanoomanjee, has stressed the importance that a Parliamentary Gender Caucus would empower the Government’s commitment to gender equality. At least 300 women would have been trained in politics by the end of 2013 under a programme aimed at politically empowering women in Mauritius, PANA reported from here Monday.

The training, which includes campaign planning and development of campaign materials, public speaking, media relations and electoral laws, is being carried out by the Ministry of Gender Equality, Child Development and Family Welfare.

On 18 July 2008, councillors of the District Council of Moka-Flacq committed themselves to ensuring that the village elections of 2010 would end with 30% women as District councillors. Women councillors make up a mere 3.7% in the Moka-Flacq District Council. This is the lowest figure not only in Mauritius but also in the SADC region.
