Ahead of Nigeria’s presidential elections on 16 February, UN Women and partners have been training women candidates, documenting political violence and advocating for measures to boost women’s low representation in Parliament.

Women Radio 91.7 has embarked on advocacy visits to stakeholders of democracy in a bid to ensure 2019 general elections is peaceful and non-violent to increase women’s participation.

As the 2019 general elections draw nearer, Women in Management, Business and Public Service (WIMBIZ), has issued a wakeup call to women all over Nigeria to begin to play an active role in politics and governance.

The non-profit organization has, over the last 17 years, implemented programs that inspire, empower and advocate for greater representation of women in leadership positions in the public and private sector.

The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, has challenged Nigerian women to vote for leaders whose electoral campaign prioritises promotion of women welfare and detest abuse against women in the society.

United Nation Women and United Nations Development programme (UNDP) on Monday launched a programme guide to prevent violence against women in the 2019 general elections.

The launch which was organised by UN Women and UNDP took place in Abuja.

Ms Comfort Lamptey, UN Women Representative to Nigeria and ECOWAS, said that the launch included 16 days of activism to end violence against women and girls.
