While women make up 49% of Nigeria’s population, their representation in politics and governance doesn’t quite match. There were 44 million women registered to vote in the past general election (out of 93 million total), but only 6.7% of women hold positions in governance.

A group under the auspices of Progressive Ambassador for APC project, has calls on President Bola Tinubu to consider women and youths in his cabinet.

Female participation in the politics and governance of Nigeria has been way down below average since the country’s transition to representative democracy in 1999. Nigerian women seem comfortable in the back seat judging by their poor outings every election year.

The Women in Politics forum, a non-governmental organisation, says it is disheartening that the federal government did not name any of the 15 airports after Nigerian women.

NAN reports that Ebere Ifendu, chairperson of the organisation, spoke during an interview in Abuja.

The Women Rights Initiative (WORI), an NGO has advocated for increased representation of women and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in governance.

Its Executive Director, Dr Laiatu Bamaiyi, made the appeal in her Sallah message to Muslims in Birnin Kebbi on Wednesday.

She appealed to President Bola Tinubu and Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi, to appoint more women and PWDs in their administration to give them a sense of belonging.
