They are only four. But that's already a record in Qatar where women are slowly, but steadily moving up the political ladder after they asserted themselves in the business, media and social sectors. Shaikha Al Jefairi, Fatima Al Kuwari, Amal Eisa Al Mohannadi and Fatima Al Gazal will in four weeks face the formidable task of winning their constituencies in the municipal elections and make the small step forward that would be a giant leap in the world of politics in Qatar. In 2007, only three women ran in the municipal elections.

Qatar aims to increase the number of women in leadership positions by 30%, the National Development Strategy (NDS) 2011-2016 has stated. The government will establish a women’s leadership centre to build women’s capacity and increase the number of women in political, organisational and business-related decision-making positions.

Qatar: Qatar's only female municipal councillor plans to be next vice president

Shaikha Al Jufairi, the only woman in Qatar's Central Municipal Council (CMC), said that she has plans to run for the post of vice-president.  Shaikha this month retained her seat in the council for the third time in a row by trouncing her nearest rival in the Airport constituency. By bagging almost 95 percent of the total 871 votes polled, she won her seat by the highest margin among all the winners in 29 constituencies.
