Johannesburg (South Africa) African women leaders are in South Africa preparing for their Pan African Women’s Conference (PAWC) to be held in Johannesburg in October. The women, from 53 nations, will meet at the Phumelela Racecourse in Turffontein in Johannesburg to discuss issues affecting African women - and come up with solutions.

Over the past year these reviews have generally shown that Africa has made some progress at all levels. Most countries have developed national gender machineries and policies, but the majority of their strategies have not been implemented. Despite all these promises and first-class commitments, African women are no better off than when they started.

The challenges confronting women politicians in Africa were given an airing recently during a press conference in South Africa's commercial hub, Johannesburg. Four politicians from Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya and Lesotho felded questions Nov. 28 by reporters from South Africa and other African states, at the Nelson Mandela Foundation. The politicians were in South Africa at the invitation of Inter Press Service (IPS) and the United Nations Development Fund for Women for a three-day workshop with journalists.

Pressure the Sudanese government to resolve the Darfur conflict and monitor United Nations troops for sexual offences, a delegation of Sudanese women told leaders at the African Union (AU) Summit here.
