New Executive Director for UN Women meets with civil society members in New York and pledges close collaboration

Just seven days after having been sworn into office, the new Executive Director of UN Women, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, welcomed civil society representatives based in New York at UN Women Headquarters and pledged strong collaboration. She acknowledged the key role of civil society in making progress for human rights, in ensuring a successful outcome at the 57th session of the Commission on the Status of Women, as witnessed in the agreement to end and prevent violence against women and girls, and in pushing for the creation of UN Women.

Hattie Carraway [...] was the first woman ever elected to the U.S. Senate. On Dec. 9, 1931, Carraway filled the seat vacated by her late husband. She was elected to a full term in 1932 and served as a Democrat from Arkansas through 1944.

Right now, there are 20 women in the U.S. Senate, the most in history. Thirteen are the first females ever elected to represent her particular state in the Senate.

Since the 1980s, more women have registered to vote than men. In the 2012 election, 7.8 million more women cast ballots than men. Women are more engaged in politics than their male counterparts in a lot of ways. But when it comes to actually making the laws, women are sitting on the sidelines, making up just 18 percent of Congress.
