United States: Fifty Women Leaders from the Middle East and North Africa in United States to Study Elections

Fifty women political leaders from the Middle East and North Africa will participate in a program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State's Middle East Partnership Initiative ( MEPI ), at the American University’s Center for Democracy and Election Management (CDEM) and Women and Politics Institute (WPI) . The Election Exchange Program will allow program participants an opportunity to learn from the U.S. experience in electoral campaigning and the chance to witness local and presidential elections up close.

In the House, 10 new congresswomen will join the 64 incumbents who were re-elected, according to Rutgers University's Center for American Women and Politics, bringing the number of women in the 435-seat body to a record 74. The 100-member U.S. Senate gained one woman, Democrat Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, who became the 17th female senator.

As UCF students, we can still feel it on campus with the 42nd SGA Senate elections.This year, there was a 70 percent increase in candidates trying to grab a seat on the senate.

Today the institute, a nonpartisan nonprofit that encourages and supports women interested in running for office, will hold a press conference and reception to embolden more women to run for office and to urge voters to support them. The events come a few days before the convening of the General Assembly, which has no female senators and only 17 female House members out of its 124 state representatives. South Carolina ranks last among states in female representation in state government, although more than half of voters are women.

Newly elected Township Councilwoman Susan Shin Angulo took part in her inaugural Council meeting tonight, and, in being sworn into office, made an historic debut as New Jersey’s first Korean-American woman to win a seat in government. According to the Center for American Women and Politics in Rutgers University’s Eagleton Institute of Politics, she is the only female government official of Korean descent currently serving in any of the state’s elected public offices.

The Go Lead training day was the culminating event of a partnership between The White House Project and Brooklyn College. The White House Project is a national non-partisan, non-profit organization that teaches and inspires women how to involve themselves in the political process.
