New research has found negative media coverage of former PM, Julia Gillard, is discouraging women from pursuing their political aspirations.

The survey, conducted by the YWCA and University of Adelaide, found 80 per cent of female respondents over the age of 31 who wanted to enter politics were less likely to do so, because they perceived the media’s treatment of Gillard as negative.

Nowshera, Lakki Marwat: Re-polling in stations with women vote bar, Pakistan

The Peshawar High Court on Monday ordered the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to hold re-elections on polling stations of NA-5 Nowshera and NA-27 Lakki Marwat, where women were barred from voting on August 22 by-elections.

The court has also ordered the ECP to withhold the notification of results from these constituencies till re-polling is completed.

Archaic and chauvinistic practices are being used to prevent Swazi women from taking part in the upcoming primary elections, despite the country having a constitution that guarantees their rights, says political analyst Dr. Sikelela Dlamini.

“The discrimination [against] women by preventing them from participating in politics is a consequence of deeply-rooted notions of male dominance and the subordination of women,” Dlamini told IPS.

Archaic and chauvinistic practices are being used to prevent Swazi women from taking part in the upcoming primary elections, despite the country having a constitution that guarantees their rights, says political analyst Dr. Sikelela Dlamini.

“The discrimination [against] women by preventing them from participating in politics is a consequence of deeply-rooted notions of male dominance and the subordination of women,” Dlamini told IPS.
