Pacific women politicians hailed for overcoming adversity

Across the Pacific less than 5 per cent of parliamentarians are women.

While that figure is much higher in Australa, around 30 per cent, Ms Stott-Despoja says the difficulties faced by women elsewhere in the region are much greater ... such as discrimination and corruption.

She recently led a delegation to Tonga to meet women in politics from around the region and told Karen Barlow it was a big sucess.

In March 2014, the Maltese electorate gave a resounding thumbs-up to four female Maltese candidates out of the six elected to the European Parliament. A month later the second female President of Malta was sworn into office.

It is with great satisfaction that one notes such a positive leap towards gender parity in Maltese politics.

Zambia: Nominate More Women Members Of Parliament

Source:

The call for more women to participate in politics need more commitment than mere political rhetoric.

Women's role in African politics must go beyond being voters or 'airport dancers'.

Women in Parliament are better placed to fight vices like gender-based violence, child slave, sexual assault and defilement, early marriages, abortions and unfair distribution of wealth.

The population of women in Zambia is large and hence the need for fair representation in Parliament (of course not the unrealistic 50 per cent).

Ireland: We need to change way we do politics to attract more women

Opinion by Breda O'Brien

Ireland is among the 10 lowest-ranked EU countries when it comes to political and economic representation of women.

In January, according to the Inter-Parliamentary Union, we ranked joint 60th in the world when it comes to women in ministerial positions, along with Kyrgyzstan, Malta, Ukraine and Uruguay. I doubt the new ministerial appointments have nudged us far up the list.

With just 99 days to go until election day in November, political parties and candidates are all hard at work, looking for votes.

Democrats want to make sure they get as many women's votes as they can. So they brought national Democratic Party Chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Florida) to Maine for a fundraiser on Monday. She also joined First District Rep. Chellie Pingree and Second District Congressional candidate Emily Cain at a pre-lunch rally.
