Women's participation in upcoming elections in Afghanistan essential: UN envoy

Women's participation in the upcoming elections in Afghanistan is essential to ensure that the process is inclusive and credible.

That's what the Secretary-General's Deputy Representative in the country, Nicholas Haysom said in the capital Kabul after meeting with representatives of civil society on Wednesday.

Afghanistan is scheduled to hold Presidential and Provincial elections on 5 April.

Mr. Haysom said the participation of women in the elections is not only important for the country but for the women of Afghanistan.

Pathumuthu (Fathima) Shahul will have her moment in the sun on April 10 when she becomes the oldest voter in Kerala, exercising her franchise at the Ambalamkunnu Anganwadi polling station in the Mavelikara Lok Sabha constituency.

Although the question whether she is the oldest voter in the State or the country might trigger a debate, the Kollam district administration has no doubt that she is the oldest voter in the district.

The passage of a draft law seeking to provide 30 percent women participation in all political parties was stalled recently by a motion for reconsideration made by Nimba County Senator Thomas Grupee.

Senator Grupee's motion for reconsideration angered several women leaders who have expressed disappointment in the senator's action.

Some of them told a local radio station that Senator Grupee is against women leadership.

Good number of women contested in previous elections, India

As many as 556 women contested from various national and regional parties during the 2009 general elections for the 15th Lok Sabha. Out of them 134 contested from the national parties, 27 state parties, 188 from registered parties (unrecognized) and 207 independents. 

When it came to parties in specific, BJP fielded 44 women contestants while INC fielded 43 women. Out of these, 23 women contestants from INC and 13 women contestants from BJP won the Elections. 

As many as 556 women contested from various national and regional parties during the 2009 general elections for the 15th Lok Sabha. Out of them 134 contested from the national parties, 27 state parties, 188 from registered parties (unrecognized) and 207 independents.
