In Cameroon, defenders of gender equality and the empowerment of women today have a reason to celebrate. This follows the announcement of the results of the legislative elections held on 30 September 2013. The results of the elections, announced in October have ensured that the National Assembly now has 56 women deputies, out of a total 180, i.e. 31.1 per cent.

Voters across Israel choose new mayors and city councilors in local elections Tuesday. In one small town, a handful of ultra-Orthodox Jewish women are defying the norms of their community by running for office.

On a recent day, children mob two women in skirts, stockings and purple T-shirts in a neighborhood park in El'ad, or Forever God. The women are candidates for town council. As part of their get-the-word-out campaign, they're blowing up balloons for kids.

In 2008, only six Arab women were elected to local office, but this year, that number is seen rising to 15.

In the last elections, 149 Arab women ran in the elections, with only six elected to local office. This year, there are 173, with forecasts predicting about 15 will be elected. And this year, the women are placed much higher on the local slates.

Yesterday I sat through three hours of evidence trying to get to the bottom of who said what at a meeting about who said what during a five minute altercation a year ago.

Keeping track of the twists and turns of “plebgate” isn’t easy, so spare a thought for the MPs of the Home Affairs Committee who tried – and failed – to get a straight answer from representatives of the Police Federation.

But at one point during the session, my ears pricked up.

The Philippines has hailed a UN Security Council resolution recognising women’s role in the peace process, saying that the measure raised the status of women from “victims” of conflict to agents of amity.

Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process Teresita Quintos-Deles said United Nations Security Council’s adoption of Resolution (UNSCR) 2122, is a historic motion because it recognises the increasingly important role of women in the peace process.

Hundreds of Paktia Province women October 23 rallied in Gardez to announce their intentions to actively participate in the upcoming elections next year.

"We will be voting for the candidates who could help us achieve our rights," civil society activist Anar Gula said.

Women's participation in the electoral process has increased in Afghanistan recently.
