18 Mar 2012 - In line with the recently recognized International Women’s Day, the UN Commission on the Status of Women (UNCSW) discussed an important aspect of women’s inequality around the world. The subject of the 56th session of the UNCSW this year was “the empowerment of rural women and their role in poverty and hunger eradication, development and current challenges.”
Government delegates and nongovernmental organizations from more than 150 countries were represented at this year’s session. Turkey was also represented by officials from different levels of government and NGOs at the UN. Among them was a prominent voice on Turkey’s women’s issues -- the voice of Güldal Akşit. She is a charter member of the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) and was the first female minister to belong to an AK Party Cabinet -- the party’s very first cabinet.
